This digital exhibit— assembled for the Historical Medical Library of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 2016—explores the discovery of radium and its early use as both a cancer treatment and a consumer health product using materials from the CPP archives.

This advertising circular was distributed Frank Hartman Radium Products, of Philadelphia. The glowing radium core in the center of the lower vessel diffused radioactive radon gas into the water. Patients receiving a prescription for “emanation therapy” would stop by the doctor’s office and drink water from the jug on a daily or weekly basis.
